Pilates was developed by German born Joseph Pilates. Growing up as a sickly child he was determined to overcome his frailty and went on to study in depth Western and Eastern forms of exercise, eventually developing what he called ‘Contrology’. He moved to the US in 1926 where he opened a physical fitness studio, and his teachings were quickly taken up by the dance world (Rudolf von Laban, Martha Graham, George Balanchine) because of the fluid movements and lengthening of the muscle structure. Although, with the development of sport’s science the original exercises have changed, the eight basic principals remain the same: Concentration, centering, breathing, control, precision, flowing movement, isolation of muscles/joints and routine. His program of exercises remains astoundingly effective today. A book of his first published in 1945 is called ‘Return to Life Through Contrology’, I invite you to do just that.
Class structure ; A gentle warm up of all major muscle groups to start to focus mind and body, a series of floor based exercises to work more intensely on the different muscle groups (small and large) including flexibility sequences, and a cool down to finish on a relaxed note.
Classes at the Pure Treatment Rooms, will give clients personal attention in relaxed surroundings, enabling them to really focus on their individual needs. This will be aided by working in small groups in a purpose built studio with the required equipment and mirrors.
