Louisa attended her first yoga class in a bamboo shack in India in 2002 and was immediately hooked. She returned to India in 2007, where she spent 6 months studying yoga, completing her teacher training and working with esteemed teachers such as Gurmukh, Venkatesh and Sheshadri.
During this visit Louisa spent time living at the Sivananda Ashram in Kerala, South India. Living at the ashram gave Louisa the chance to deepen her yoga beyond a physical practice and to immerse herself in the uniting energy of ashram life. Louisa brings this energy to the students she teaches , encouraging them to embrace yoga as a way of life, rather than just a practice ‘on the mat.’
During her classes Louisa guides students to develop a personalised practice, rather than following the ‘one size fits all’ model, which often dominates in Western yoga classes. She places continual emphasis on drawing strength and energy from the breath, using a range of breathing techniques to release tension from both body and mind. This approach ensures her yoga classes are accessible for everyone, regardless of age or ability: if you can breath, you can do yoga!
On a recent visit to India, Louisa completed an intensive course in ayurveda, living and studying at a traditional ayurvedic clinic. As a qualified ayurveda therapist Louisa shares her knowledge about ayurvedic diet, nutrition and general wellbeing with her yoga students, offering them an ideal complement to their practice.
In 2012, during her own pregnancy, Louisa embarked on a peri-natal yoga diploma with Birthlight. Practicing and teaching yoga throughout her pregnancy further confirmed to Louisa that there really is a type of yoga to suit everyone, and ensured she was able to enjoy optimum health throughout her pregnancy. She birthed her son at home, using the breathing techniques, movement and visualisation she teaches to her pregnant students, and enjoyed a quick, pain-free birth.
In 2013 Louisa will be expanding her support for pre-and post-natal women by taking the first steps towards becoming a doula and aims to offer post-natal support to new mums.
