The chiropractic profession has grown over the last 100 years to become the third largest primary health care profession in the developed world after dentistry and medicine.
Chiropractic works by identifying the underlying cause of your pain, and correcting that, rather than merely masking the symptoms in the short term. Our focus is the nervous system, which controls every cell in your body, and is encased in the spinal column (made up of 24 bones called vertebrae). Factors such as accidents, physical and mental stress, poor posture, lack of exercise and poor diet can cause these vertebrae to lose their normal position or motion. The end result of this can be localised pain in the spinal joints, and referred pain in other muscles and organs of the body. Chiropractors aim to restore normal motion and alignment in the joints, thus stemming the problem at its source.
The initial consultation lasts one hour, and encompasses taking the case history, a full physical examination (including orthopaedic and neurological testing), and giving the report of findings – when we tell you what we think is wrong, how we are planning to put it right, and long we perceive that might take. Treatment is also usually given in this hour. Subsequent treatments last 30 minutes. Treatment methods may include gentle manipulation, mobilisation of joints, soft tissue work, and advice on exercises, posture, and lifestyle. How many treatments are required depends very much on what the condition is, how long it has been there, how you respond to treatment, and last but not least, how much of the advice given you take on board!
Initial consultations cost £50, and subsequent treatments £33 each. We are covered by most of the major healthcare insurers, including AXA PPP, Aviva, and Simply Health. If you are unsure as to whether chiropractic is the right treatment for your condition, you can book a free 30 minute consultation to discuss things further with one of us.
